Vintage Stencil Wall Covering

We live in a 1937 home in the Bay Area, I love the architectural details this home holds. Our neighborhood is in  a lovely old section of town, with 80 year old trees lining the streets, and all of the homes are quite different from each other, but all with the same vintage charm of the year they were built. We have done many home improvements over the years, trying to keep the integrity of the period, but not compromise on modern conveniences. We’ve lived here for over 20 years, and our project list was LONG! So we threw a coat of decent paint on the master bedroom and hung some curtains, it was ok, but I think that paint was on our walls for 18 years. too busy raising kids, homeschooling, music lessons and so on to really put much thought in the Master Bedroom. Now our kids are grown, (even out of College)  It’s our turn to have a beautiful space, a relaxing and timeless place to finish the day.

So this is what we did: we decided to imagine something a little bold, yet timeless. I’m not a huge fan of wallpaper, (unless in the right space)  and when we bought this house, OMG! almost every wall in the home was covered in wallpaper, and it was such a nightmare taking it down!  I think the previous owners stuck it up with superglue! My daughter and I  had done some stencil work to her bedroom a decade ago, and it is still very lovely, so I thought I would see what I could find.  Well turns out, there are companies now that have created the most beautiful and intricate selection of stencils you can imagine! You can even have stencils custom made. They have different themes, time periods, etc..  I found this stencil, and it was so much easier than the stencils I purchased at Michaels  10 years ago for my daughter’s room. There is some planning and measurement involved if you want it to flow smoothly throughout the room, but for the most part it was easy, a little time consuming, but easy! The paint color was another dilemma, I couldn’t find a color that didn’t look too trendy or that I really loved. So I left the big box store and headed to my local Sherwin Williams Paint store. They had just what I was looking for in their Heritage Paint Collection. Who knew they had color formula’s from days gone by. The color I chose was pretty bold, and my husband wasn’t sure, he tried to talk me into a softer lighter color, but I could see it. So Peacock Plume is what I chose. I’m so glad he trusts me, and doesn’t give too big of a fuss with my decorating ideas. I guess after almost 30 years together, and countless home improvements, he trusts my vision, and can see it too, if I explain it just right. He is a perfectionist, and a talented handyman! So when I see something in my “minds eye” so to speak, he can help me make it a reality! I love that! Sometimes it takes a minute to make him see what I am proposing, but he usually comes around. lol. Below are some pictures of the finished project and resources for where I found the stencils and paint. If you take on a project like this I would love to see your results, you can leave them in the comment section at the end of this page. Thank you for reading this post and good luck on your next decorating project.

There are literally thousands of stencils to choose from. Click to see if you find inspiration for your home. I love this company!
My Son, Riley helped me with this project. We first cleared out the room, moved the furniture we didn't want to remove to middle of room and covered with a tarp, and painted the walls the solid color. Then with the contrasting cream color, began the stenciling. Mapping out the room so that stencil would flow around the corners and not end with a big gap.
The stencil was high quality heavy plastic, but you have to be careful not to put too much paint where it will bleed through. We used a stencil brush, saturated lightly with paint. After several passes, you might need to stop and clean the stencil, and wait for it to dry. They line up perfectly and really take the guess work of getting it straight.
Light reflects differently in each corner of the room, sometimes it looks like a different color on the wall. But I still love the way it turned out.
Oh so Cozy
There you have it, a fun way to dress up your walls without committing to wallpaper. I hope you are inspired to try something like this, it was really fun watching it come together, and I absolutely love the way it turned out. And like my husband says, “It’s just paint, you can always paint over it.”
