Trash to Treasure Green Desk

What is one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, always rings true when you find a beautiful piece of furniture that is about to be discarded to the dumps, and you can bring it back to a beautiful and functional heirloom.
I love antiques, but let’s face it, not every piece of antique furniture is easily transformed.  Not the case with this little kidney bean shaped desk that was cosmetically in pretty rough shape.  It had lots of water damage, and scratches, and some of the vaneer was peeling back. With a little elbow grease and a new vision for this desk, I was able to give it a new lease on life and enjoy a unique vintage piece of furniture in my new office space.
I believe this desk is from the 1940’s from similar ones I found online, and in perfect condition is worth between $400 – $700 conservatively.  Like I’ve said throughout this blog, I have always been drawn to things from early mid century and earlier, especially the 1940’s, this desk is no exception.
Below is step by step how I was able to bring this desk back to a loved piece of furniture.  My Grandma always said, “With a little elbow grease, you can make anything shine”,  and I believe it!

The water damage and scratches were pretty extensive, as you can see in the pictures. I love to re-stain furniture when I can, but I'm not opposed to a beautiful painted piece either.
First I got my drawers ready for sanding and used a little wood putty for the vaneer gouges.
Then sanded the wood with 120 grit sandpaper initially then final sanding with 180 grit, until smooth.

Sand desk with palm sander and by hand in small detailed areas.
Ready for paint!
Choose a good quality paint. I like using Sherwin Williams paint in a satin finish, and with a good brush.
I like to put on 3 thin coats with plenty of drying time between coats.
You can use a roller brush to help hide any brush marks for big surfaces like the top.
After removing handles, you can usually get a good result with brass hardware with Brasso or other metal cleaner.
After cleaning the handles, they still wern't as bright as I wanted them, so I decided to spray them gold to match the gold accent paint, I will be adding to the detail work.
These Gold Leaf Deco paint pens are amazing! Be careful though they will drip if you push them too much.
Try and paint with long and straight strokes with the paint pen.
Lastly, I wanted to line the drawers with paper, and found this vintage ad paper that I thought was fun. A few measurements, and tracing the bottom of the drawers, now my desk drawers are fresh and clean.

Hello Heidi, Thank you for the compliment! The color is Oakmoss from Sherwin Williams, it is in a satin finish. If you go on their website, they have vintage or nostalgic color pallets to choose from that they don’t have chips for in the store. Have a happy New Year!
