Strawberry Cathedral Trellis

Sitting on my deck, staring at a blank wall where a potted lemon tree once sat, I started to think.  “What would look good there?”  It looks so bare with the tree gone, Oh, a nice little bistro table and a couple of chairs.  That would look good, and function well. So I go out and find a beautiful little marble top table, and spray paint a couple of old iron chairs I had in the back yard.  Perfect! But wait a minute, something is missing? So I say to my daughter, ” would you like to go to Lowes and look for a little trellis and a few strawberry plants?” Sure, she replies.  We come home with one iron trellis and 3 strawberry plants and 3 pots. Next morning, I’m back at Lowes getting two more trellis’ and 7 more plants and pots. lol.. This is how a lot of my home improvement projects go, I have an idea, and my family helps me make it a reality! This little area turned out so quaint and beautiful and delicious! Read on to see exactly how this inexpensive project added a lot of charm and character to our front deck.

The trellis I chose at Lowes reminded me of cathedral windows, so I decided to mimic this with one a little higher in the middle. My husband drilled pilot holes and bolted them together, clamping each one until they were all secure, then attached them to the house with an L bracket and a stucco screw.

Make sure everything is level before attaching to the wall. Drill holes in plastic pots and attach to trellis with s hooks, I also spray painted black to match.
These are "Self Watering Pots" this just means they hold a little extra water in the bottom. I also mixed my soil with a little vermiculite to help the soil remain moist between waterings.

I planted these a few months ago, and then decided to add a little thorn-less mini rose vine to the bottom to make it more lush, that has not bloomed yet, but when I bought it, it had several little tiny yellow roses on it. It has however grown a lot this summer, and I will update this page when it all comes into bloom.  The strawberries have produced an endless crop of delicious sweet berries all summer! The pots do have to be watered regularly, as they are small and dry out easily even with the vermiculite and special pots. I may change from strawberries to winter lettuces, or herbs as we change seasons to fall and winter. Hope this inspires you to make a garden anywhere! On your front porch, a small balcony or a big back yard! You are only limited by your imagination, and hey that’s what the internet is for!  lol..
